The benefits of gardening are many, and can be shared by our state/community in these ways.
Gardening is universal. As a common thread, it brings us together as neighbors in one community, friends in one state, and ultimately, as members of one nation. Gardening joins us in a shared purpose, bridging social, ethnic, cultural and economic boundaries.
Gardening builds communities. Neighborhood beautification projects, school gardens, and community gardens "grow" more than plants. They provide common ground for people of all spheres to collaborate, share their cultures, form a sense of ownership, and develop friendships.
Gardening transforms lives. The presence of gardens reduces crime in urban neighborhoods, and helps patients recover more quickly. Gardening diminishes behavioral problems in schools, and decreases recidivism of prison inmates.
Gardening grows responsible leaders. Through nurturing the growth of plants and observing the connections among living things in nature, gardeners develop the skills and disposition to becoming understanding and responsible decision-makers.
Gardens provide lifelong learning environments. As Thomas Jefferson said, "But though an old man, I am but a young gardener." Gardening requires exploration, imagination, and curiosity. Observation, problem solving and skill building never end. In school gardens, students grasp concepts in all curriculum areas and learn vital life skills.
Gardening promotes physical and emotional health. Physical exercise, fresh air and connecting with Mother Nature all contribute to a gardener's health, and help us feel relaxed and find calm.
Whereas gardening has the power to be an element for positive change in our community, I hereby proclaim that ____________________________ (state/city) will celebrate the month of April 2006 as National Gardening Month.
